Dirty Western (1975)

A gritty and garish crime story under the mistaken guise of an erotic movie, Dirty Western exceeds its ’90s sequel in extremes of grim seriousness and clownish absurdity. Much more of a Death Wish than a Blazing Saddles, DW’s writing strays from the intended purpose. All sexual encounters but the film’s first are tragic, in both context and execution. Only the stunning actresses’ ever present nudity salvage the remainder, evoking a softcore feel to the film—despite hurried, extreme close ups on fellatio. The elusive and effective Barbara Bourbon and her actress costars are all beautiful, as well as the location shots, so their misuse on screen is lamentable. That aesthetic appeal and some minor, but interesting, details propel the movie at the right moments, especially in the beginning narration sketches, the original music score and the script’s tenuous posse. Haphazard quality describes overall most of DW’s technical details throughout the picture.

Again, not much of an erotic thriller, DW does have some success telling a ’70s revenge tale of Bourbon’s character’s grave suffering.
