Matinee Idol (1984)

A famous on-screen couple reliably turns their volatile mutual contempt off camera into convincing sexual sparks once filming starts, but their past profitability may not be enough to satisfy adult studio executives unsentimental about their history and histrionics.

Grafting the conventional parody about filmmaking woes behind the scenes onto an unconventional adult film studio setting, Matinee Idol recycles familiar themes about grandiose movie stars in decline, manipulative misers in management, and star-struck newcomers in cross hairs.

If you can enjoy a traditional, at times corny, screenplay about uncomplicated, often silly, characters blinded with stubbornness, MI provides some welcome and familiar moments along with the introduction of a bright new starlet, Angel, and the closing of Jesie St. James’s veteran career. Of course, the irrepressibly glamorous appearance Kay Parker makes redeems the entire screening regardless.
